What is a DNS Resolution Error?
A DNS (Domain Name System) error occurs when your device cannot translate a domain name (such as example.com) into an IP address. Symptoms include “DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN” or “Server IP address could not be found”.
Common Causes
- Your ISP’s default DNS resolver is experiencing downtime
- Stale or corrupted local DNS cache on your computer or router
- Domain name expired or DNS records were recently modified
- Local firewall or antivirus software blocking port 53
How to Fix DNS Resolution Errors
- Flush DNS cache:
Windows:ipconfig /flushdns
Mac:sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder - Switch to reliable public DNS:
Cloudflare DNS:1.1.1.1and1.0.0.1
Google DNS:8.8.8.8and8.8.4.4 - Restart your home Wi-Fi router to clear router DNS caches.
- Verify domain status on IsDownNow.
